A Bittersweet Farewell: Donnie Wahlberg Reflects on His Time in Blue Bloods
On his last day filming for Blue Bloods, Donnie Wahlberg anticipated a range of emotions, but he certainly didn’t expect to spend two full days in tears following the series’ conclusion.
Since the show’s inception in 2010, Wahlberg has portrayed Detective Danny Reagan. In an interview with Variety, he shared that after wrapping up filming in June, he was ”unable to stop the tears for a couple more days.”
A pivotal moment occurred when fellow cast member Tom Selleck read a poignant poem to everyone after they filmed their final family dinner scene — an iconic element featured throughout all episodes.
At 55 years old, Wahlberg confessed that he couldn’t hold it together during Selleck’s reading of Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “Love Is Not All,” stating, “I literally felt like my entire life unfolded before my eyes.”
He reminisced about the gravity of listening to Selleck speak and how it made him reflect on his remarkable journey: “It was magical; here I was as a kid from a struggling background who grew up watching this man on screen now sharing such an incredible moment filled with wisdom and kindness.”
Embracing Emotions: An Unforgettable Sendoff
Selleck himself expressed that while this particular poem held special meaning for him, reciting it at that moment was spontaneous. For Wahlberg, however, this wasn’t out of character; he noted that Selleck often brought thoughtful words or quotes at important times during their work together.
“He would inspire us with messages meant to refocus our attention on what truly matters,” said Wahlberg. “It always felt ethereal.” As they reached the end of production and heard those fateful words “That’s a wrap,” there was collective anticipation among the cast.
Wahlberg openly discussed his overwhelming feelings on social media soon after filming wrapped; accompanied by footage from his final arrival on set, he penned an emotional tribute regarding both that specific day and his fourteen-year journey with Blue Bloods. He described the experience as “one of life’s true blessings.”
Cherishing Memories: Treasures from Set
As means to preserve these memories, Wahlberg decided to keep several items from his time on set. He mentioned taking home two key costumes worn by Danny Reagan—the blue suit and dress blues—but arguably more significant is what else remained close at heart.
“I hadn’t planned on taking much until I found out those famed dining table and chairs had been left unused in storage,” Wahlerg revealed recently. He intends to incorporate them into different locations of Walmart’s restaurant chain so fans can enjoy sitting at their favorite dining spot for photo opportunities before eventually raffling them off for charity benefitting DEA’s Detectives Endowment Association.
The heartfelt series finale of Blue Bloods is set to air Friday night at 10 p.m. ET exclusively through CBS—marking not only an end but also celebrating its rich legacy built over years together with fans across America.
