Golden Retriever Beacon, the canine who offered support during the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic trials, has been discharged and is back home after being hospitalized the previous week. The positive news was shared by Tracey Callahan Molnar, Beacon’s owner, on Instagram on Monday, September 9th, with an update that states, “Beacon is home!! he’s home!”
A week prior to his return home, Beacon was admitted to an emergency pet hospital due to symptoms like stiffness, labored breathing, and a fever. His x-rays revealed fluid in his chest cavity, causing the labored breathing. At TrueCare for Pets, the medical staff taught Callahan Molnar how to drain the excess fluid from his chest cavity, and the medication he received has reduced fluid production significantly.
While there is still no specific diagnosis, Callahan Molnar mentioned that Beacon’s condition is improving. She stated that he has started eating some of his meals on his own and has been hand-fed the rest. In addition, Beacon is receiving numerous well-wishes and messages of encouragement from supporters, for which Callahan Molnar expressed deep thankfulness.
Callahan Molnar continues to encourage everyone to keep Beacon in their thoughts. The USA Gymnastics team also expressed their well-wishes for Beacon’s speedy recovery and even created a GoFundMe page to help cover his medical expenses. Beacon, a 4-year-old golden retriever, is the first therapy dog for the USAG and holds the team’s “Goodest Boy” title.
Callahan Molnar, a former gymnast and coach, has had Beacon since he was a puppy. She initially had him as a service animal before getting him certified as a therapy dog through Pet Partners. She believes that his presence and interactions are beneficial, noting that studies prove that petting a dog or even watching someone pet a dog can help lower blood pressure and anxiety, increase serotonin and dopamine levels, and decrease cortisol levels. Despite the attention he receives, Beacon is friendly and wants to interact with everyone he meets, taking his time for greetings.
