Supporting the Next Generation of Leaders in Government
Have you ever pondered how Nimitz Highway acquired its name or who “Nimitz” actually was?
Growing up in Texas, every time I drive down Nimitz, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for home. Many are unaware of the incredible story behind the highway’s namesake and the valuable lesson it holds about giving young people a chance to lead, which is pertinent as we contemplate the type of leaders we want to see in the upcoming primary election.
Chester William Nimitz, after whom the highway is named, was born in 1885 in Fredericksburg, Texas. He had a challenging childhood, with his father passing away before he was born, and his mother remarrying his uncle. However, Nimitz was inspired by witnessing a troop of West Point cadets passing through his town and expressed a desire to be like them. Despite being initially rejected from attending the U.S. military academy at West Point, he persevered and gained admission to the Navy’s academy at Annapolis with the help of his community.
Misfortunes accompanied Nimitz, such as an ear infection that left him partially deaf in one ear for life and a career-ending mistake as a young ensign when he ran a ship aground. However, he was given a second chance to pursue a successful career, eventually leading a massive military force from Hawaii during WWII. Nimitz’s story is a testimony to the importance of giving young people opportunities and second chances.
Nimitz’s story holds important lessons for how we need to treat and trust young people in 2024. Currently, there’s a lack of trust in young people, denying them the chance to utilize their passion and dedication to serve.
This year’s primary election offers an excellent opportunity to welcome younger voices and ideas into the government. We have to consider younger candidates who exhibit promise and aptitude, not discriminating against elders, but acknowledging the need for fresh perspectives in leadership.
It’s crucial to empower young people to bring their idealism and motivation to the realm of government. Nimitz, who was given help and the benefit of the doubt at every stage of his career, carried on this tradition by mentoring young officers, offering forgiveness for mistakes, and holding the door open for the next generation of leaders.
There is a growing gap between old and new doctrines, necessitating fresh perspectives and courageous experimentation unencumbered by past assumptions, which is why we need to encourage young people to take on leadership roles.
We must discard the notion that young people cannot handle the responsibilities of public office and instead ask, “What can they do, if we give them a chance?” Embracing a generational shift in leadership will rejuvenate and revitalize our country, enabling us to reach for the future with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.
