The Electric Bus Revolution at Walla Walla Public Schools
Initial Hesitations Turned into Success
John Griffith, the transportation director at Walla Walla Public Schools, was initially skeptical when district leadership proposed investing in electric school buses. “My first reaction was—I’m not so sure about this,” Griffith recounted. However, after a conversation with the superintendent about the importance of considering future generations, he decided to support a trial with three electric buses launched in 2023. “These buses have exceeded our expectations,” he noted during an Ecology visit last September.
Since their introduction, Walla Walla Public Schools has secured funding for an additional fifteen electric buses scheduled for delivery in the upcoming year. This development positions them as one of Washington state’s largest fleets of electric school vehicles. Funding came from a combination of grants from Ecology and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which enabled even smaller districts like theirs to embark on this ambitious project.
Unified Transition Efforts
Embracing electric transportation has been a collaborative endeavor for Walla Walla School District.
“None of this would be possible without teamwork,” emphasized Griffith. “This initiative is not just my achievement; it’s the result of everyone joining forces—from our superintendent and electricity providers to bus drivers.”
Superintendent Wade Smith played a crucial role in strategizing toward long-term reductions in carbon emissions within his district. He quickly recognized the benefits attached to switching to electric buses.
“With 41 operational school buses covering 31 routes and diesel models averaging only 4 to 8 miles per gallon, transitioning our fleet simply made sense,” Smith explained.
Broad community backing further facilitated this transition, with strong participation from school staff, board members, and students actively involved through initiatives like the Green Club at Walla Walla High School. For Smith, witnessing students’ excitement upon seeing their new electric buses affirmed that their efforts were making an impact.
The switch has resulted in substantial financial savings as well—each electric bus now saves approximately $400 per month on operational costs for the district.
“When you calculate that across fifteen vehicles, we’re looking at around $50,000 annually that can be rerouted towards other priorities or help us fund more eco-friendly buses if we secure additional grants,” stated Smith.
