A Year of Struggle: How Israel’s War is Unraveling Gaza’s Economy

The Destruction ⁤of Gaza’s Agricultural Heartland: A Farmer’s‌ Harrowing Tale

In the ⁣northern ‍region of Rafah, once-vibrant farmland lies in ruins, devastated by military actions.⁤ Yaqoub Abu Daabs, a 55-year-old Palestinian⁢ farmer, stands amid the wreckage of his⁣ property. He cannot reach his fields to assess the full extent of the devastation or retrieve essential ‍farming equipment and supplies that are partially buried under debris.

Three months ago, Abu Daabs endured the tragic loss⁤ of his son Muath, who was killed by an Israeli airstrike while attempting to salvage what remained of their farm. Since then, he has been too fearful to return to the area.

“Muath aimed to recover whatever he could before heavy machinery completed the destruction,” he shared with The New Arab.⁤ “Following his untimely death,⁤ they set ablaze storage units and demolished two crucial water wells.”

Aside from mourning his son’s passing, Abu Daabs faces financial ruin‌ after losing two full harvest seasons due to ongoing conflict—an economic blow that has shattered his way of life. With ⁢irrigation systems destroyed and continual bombardment as harvest time approached, obtaining access to cropping land‍ became perilous.

After⁢ dedicating years towards enhancing soil fertility through vigorous labor and investments—including leveling land and constructing water wells—Abu Daabs finds all ⁣efforts reduced to naught.

For several years now, he had been leasing approximately 70 dunams ⁤(around‌ 17 acres) from ⁢the Palestinian Land Authority at great personal expense.⁤ His investments included irrigation infrastructure⁣ intended for long-term agricultural sustainability.

“All my efforts have vanished; I’ve gone from a productive contributor within my community’s economy to someone burdened with debt,” he lamented.

He feels deeply impoverished by ⁢destruction directly‌ linked to war━a tragedy ‌that not only impacted him but also extended its grasp on around 40 families who relied on farming for their livelihoods throughout various seasons.
“I was doing well financially before conflict erupted; now I’m just another statistic in‍ Gaza⁢ where countless others share this⁢ fate after losing more than half a million dollars due⁢ just for damaged crops and infrastructure,” he explained sorrowfully.

Abu Daabs’‌ experiences mirror those faced by many farmers across Gaza following devastating military operations in recent months—turning individuals⁣ into beggars reliant on humanitarian assistance. “It is nothing short of an economic disaster impacting every aspect⁤ imaginable,” he expressed candidly.
