“It’s definitely not an easy task. You have to get in low and dive right into it,” remarked Dennis Walker, Chief of the Algonquin Police Department. “But it’s an amazing experience.”
This year marked the 16th iteration of the Plane Pull Competition, aimed at supporting Special Olympics Illinois. The event was brought to life through collaborations between the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run, United Airlines, and Chicago’s local government.

“If you’re not feeling pumped when you’re here, something’s off,” expressed Kathy Schniedwind, Chair of the Board for Special Olympics Illinois. “The energy and passion in this atmosphere are simply contagious.”Teams composed of 20 individuals competed to drag a 95,000-pound airplane a distance of 12 feet as quickly as they could manage—each striving toward impressive fundraising targets totaling $200,000.

Emmerson Hjort from Special Olympics Illinois played a pivotal role in orchestrating this unforgettable event. Her enthusiasm bubbled over as she described witnessing its growth each year: “It brings me such joy! My heart swells seeing everyone collaborate so energetically while having fun.”
Reflecting on her daughter’s commitment to the event, Kathleen Hjort said with pride: “It’s all her doing—she dives right in and absolutely gives it her all.”
