A Day in the Life of a Motion Capture Technology Leader
My role at the University of Salford is quite diverse, and I find it very rewarding. I am currently part of a small team responsible for managing the Motion Capture space within the School of Arts, Media, and Creative Technology. This facility caters to students from various disciplines such as performance, animation, dance, and games design at different academic levels.
Our daily tasks revolve around meeting the evolving needs of our students. We provide guidance on motion capture technology and help them apply it to enhance their creative projects. This involves capturing movement for animation or performance-based projects and ensuring that they gain practical experience in utilizing this technology.
When we are not directly assisting students, we focus on innovating and enhancing our motion capture space to better serve their needs. We actively seek feedback from users which we use to develop new techniques and applications for the technology. In a recent collaboration with other university colleagues, we integrated motion capture with medical simulation for a virtual patient system that allowed medical students to interact with simulated patients using motion capture technology.

My journey into the media industry began during my university years when I attended a masterclass led by the head of an independent film company. This opportunity led me to work on their low-budget horror feature films and heavy metal music videos using basic equipment like an SLR camera and builders’ lights.
Prior to pursuing my degree in film production and media technology, I initially worked in IT as a technician but felt unfulfilled due to its lack of creativity.
