A spokesperson for the system declined to specify which facilities were affected by the job cuts or the types of positions being eliminated.
The spokesperson mentioned via email that BILH, like many healthcare providers nationwide, is grappling with significant cost increases, limited reimbursement opportunities, and evolving patient care trends. At a local level, hospital leaders have recognized opportunities to restructure staff roles and will be eliminating certain positions in order to best meet local healthcare needs in a sustainable manner.
It has been confirmed by the Massachusetts Nurses Association that Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth, Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, and Beverly Hospital have cut a small number of unionized nurses’ positions. However, these laid-off nurses will have access to other available positions within the organization. Additionally, 22 mid-level nurse managers at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth were also laid off; these individuals were not represented by the union.
Following a merger in 2019 that resulted in its establishment as a new entity, Beth Israel Lahey Health oversees over 2,300 beds across 14 hospitals located throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. This includes well-known institutions such as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and New England Baptist Hospital in Boston and Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.
