NTNU Marine Phytoplankton Ecologist Associate Professor Position

The Marine Sciences section at the Department of Biology (IBI) at NTNU is seeking an Associate Professor with expertise in marine phytoplankton ecology to fill a permanent position. This position plays a vital role in NTNU’s efforts to use advanced technology for research and education in phytoplankton dynamics to enhance ecosystem management.

Focus of the Marine Sciences section includes sustainable management, production, and utilization of marine biological resources. The Associate Professor will contribute to research, education, and innovation activities in marine sciences, particularly providing better knowledge on changes in marine primary production and biodiversity using new tools.

Utilizing advanced sensors attached to robotic platforms, such as the Observation Pyramid (OP), the hired candidate is expected to collect and analyze data for the study of marine phytoplankton. The department has positioned itself as a leader in using marine robotics and sensors in marine ecological applications and seeks to expand its capacity and expertise in this area.

The ideal candidate will create synergies with other sections within the Department of Biology and contribute to cross-disciplinary research at NTNU. The position also offers access to the NTNU and SINTEF infrastructure at the Norwegian Ocean Technology Centre, providing ample opportunities for research and innovation.

Teaching and research activities will be conducted within the marine sciences domain, including active involvement in the international study program “Master in Ocean Resources” (MSOCEAN) and teaching marine-related courses in the bachelor’s program in Biology.

This position is sponsored for a 5-year period by Equinor through the Academy Agreement and will thereafter be fully covered by NTNU. The Associate Professor will report to the Head of the Department.

The candidate will be responsible for initiating research in phytoplankton ecology, participating in interdisciplinary research and educational collaborations, engaging in applications for external funding, and contributing to the further development of the Department of Biology and the Marine Sciences section. Teaching responsibilities include supervision of PhD and MSc fellows.

In terms of required qualifications, the ideal candidate should have a PhD or comparable academic work within marine phytoplankton ecology or related fields, a minimum of two years of relevant research experience post-PhD, and strong scientific track record. Basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university level is essential.

Preferred qualifications include demonstrated ability to attract external funding, conduct internationally competitive research, and experience with statistical methods and machine learning approaches for ocean health state assessments.
