Why Was Ann Curry Fired, Ann Curry probably gave one of the most difficult news reports of her entire career this morning; that of her ouster and how those damn tears came out… It was never going to be pleasant and it has been generally understood that Ann Curry would at some point have to go public and basically admit that she has been thrown out of journalism’s most revered roles, that of co anchor of NBC’s the ‘Today show.’
And brutal and bitter sweet it was. Perhaps rueful might be the better word: “This is not easy to say,” Curry said at the start of her tearful announcement, “but today is going to be my last morning as a regular co-host of ‘Today.'”
And she continued after a long pause: “this is not as I expected to ever leave this couch after 15 years.”
Curry’s voice then grew husky with emotion as the moment seemed to sink in, and her eyes filled with tears. “I’m going to have a new title and a new role,” she said.
She addressed the viewers directly. “You are the real ‘Today’ show family,”
She added “For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line-but man, I did try.”
And then in the end, the ship faded out deep behind our view:
“To all of you watching, thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me touch yours.”
Could it be even more brutal than that? Even Matt Lauer generally understood to be one of the major authority figures behind the backstabbing of much revered Ann Curry couldn’t hide his emotions. Even if by now he has paradoxically gone from a beloved hero to a much maligned figure:
“You have the biggest heart in the business,” he offered his eyes averting hers.
