Stan Cadwallader, Actor Jim Nabors, best known for starring in “Gomer Pyle, USMC,” has married his longtime partner Stan Cadwallader, Nabors tells Hawaii News Now. The two have been together 38 years, but have now officially tied the knot in Seattle on Jan. 15. “I’m 82 and he’s in his 60s and so we’ve been together for 38 years and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody. I’m very happy that I’ve had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I’m just very happy,” says Nabors.
Nabors says he and Cadwallader traveled to the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle. The ceremony was private — a judge performed the ceremony in their hotel room with just a couple of friends there as witnesses. Gay marriage just became legal in Washington state last month.
“I’m not a debater. And everybody has their own opinion about this and actually I’m not an activist so I’ve never gotten involved in any of this,” says Nabors, of the issue of gay marriage. He says that when he was working as an actor, he was open about being gay to his co-workers and friends, but never publicly came out in the media until now.
“I haven’t ever made a public spectacle of it. Well, I’ve known since I was a child, so, come on. It’s not that kind of a thing. I’ve never made a huge secret of it at all,” says Nabors. “This is really no big deal. My friend and I, my partner, we went through all of this 38 years ago. So I mean, we made our vows and that was it. It was to each other, but nevertheless, we were a couple.”
Nabors and Cadwallader met in 1975 when Cadwallader was working as a firefighter in Honolulu. Eventually Cadwallader went to work for Nabors and a relationship developed.
Nabors is also known for singing “Back Home Again in Indiana” every year before the Indianapolis 500, but he had to miss 2012 due to heart surgery, so he pre-recorded a tape to be played. There is no word as to whether he’ll be there in 2013.
