Road Rage Shooting

Road Rage Shooting, One man faces charges of attempted murder and and another man remains in the hospital Tuesday night after a shooting on Monday that the Knox County Sheriff’s Office describes as stemming from “road rage.”

Knox County prosecutors have charged 61-year-old Rodney Lee Scott of 2705 Mary Emily Lane with two counts of attempted first degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident after a violent run-in on the road Monday in Northeast Knoxville. He is being held on $1 million bond.

UT Medical Center listed 23-year-old Tyler Lakin in stable condition as of Tuesday night. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) said Lakin was shot three times in the back and once in the wrist.

The events leading up to the shooting began Monday afternoon, according to the KCSO. That is when Lakin and and 33-year-old JR Trisler were both riding motorcycles exiting I-640 at Washington Pike and were nearly hit by Scott, who was driving a Saturn SUV. Detectives say the two riders waved their arms at Scott to make sure he saw them, Scott made an obscene gesture at the riders, and things escalated.

The Sheriff’s Office said on Millertown Pike, Scott stopped his SUV, backed up, knocked Trisler off his motorcycle, and then drove away. A witness, Joseph Jackson, stopped to help the riders and called 911. The three then proceeded to follow the SUV for another mile until Scott pulled into his residence on Mary Emily Lane. At that point, KCSO says the two riders and the witness were waiting outside across the street for police to arrive when Scott emerged from his garage with a gun in each hand and opened fire.

Detectives said Scott missed when firing at Trisler, but shot Lakin a total of four times. KCSO says Scott continued to shoot Lakin “as he lay in the road.”

“The way I see it, when you fire that many rounds, especially when somebody is on the ground and you’re still firing off rounds, there is a sick motivation behind that,” witness Joseph Jackson told WBIR 10News on Monday night.

Officers arrested Scott and seized a couple of handguns, a .22 revolver and a .25 Beretta.

Rodney Scott’s wife, Joan Scott, spoke to WBIR 10News on the phone about the incident, but she did not want to speak on-camera. Joan Scott said she was at home Monday afternoon when her husband arrived home and said he was being followed by some men who were then blocking the end of the driveway. Ms. Scott said her husband expressed fear that the men following him were going to attempt to come inside their home and told her to call 911. She said Rodney Scott then told her to stay inside and he ran out to confront the men. Then the shooting took place.
