Catherine Zeta-Jones’s mother-in-law has revealed how her son and the Welsh star saved their marriage and the pain that nearly brought it to an end.
Diana Douglas, 91, spoke for the first time about the couple’s tumultuous last few years which have seen her son beat cancer and her daughter-in-law battle depression.
Hollywood A-lister Douglas, 69, and Welsh actress Zeta-Jones, 44, announced they were taking some time apart to re-evaluate their marriage last August.
She revealed a series of intimate holidays helped the pair to reconcile.
Mrs Douglas confirmed: “They are together. I knew they would work it out. They’re both gentle people, not hysterical. They’re always very affectionate and easy with each other.”
Diana, a successful actress herself back in her day, was married to Michael’s movie star dad Kirk from 1943 to 1951 but now lives with her husband of 11 years Donald Webster.
Webster, who served as a treasury chief under US President Richard Nixon, spoke of the pair’s determination to save their marriage.
He said: “They went to Canada, they have a place in Quebec, they went to Bermuda and they went to the Caribbean with the kids on vacation. They’ve had a lot of time in the last two months.”
Swansea-born Ms Zeta-Jones announced in 2011 she was suffering from bipolar disorder and has checked herself into rehab several times since. Her mental health problems had reportedly put great strain on their relationship.
Diana said: “I knew she was dealing with depression. I think she felt it was probably going to come out anyway and it was better that it came from her.”
“She’s dealing with it. She’s a very realistic person,” the Bermuda-born former actress added.
Douglas was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010. Douglas’ cancer reached stage four, the most advanced stage, before it was discovered and treated by a Canadian doctor.
In the same year, Douglas’ son from his previous marriage, Cameron, was jailed for drug offences and subsequently had his sentence extended for possessing drugs in prison. Diana said the court case “affected the whole family very deeply”.
Douglas was first introduced to Zeta-Jones by Danny DeVito at a 1998 dinner party in France and his opening line to her was “I’d like to father your children”, recalled Diana.
“That was quite an introduction. He must have been absolutely swept away by her,” she said.
Douglas got his wish in 2000 when son Dylan, now 13, was born followed three years later by daughter Carys, 10.
The couple share the same birthday but 25 years apart, an age gap Douglas’ mum dismisses as irrelevant.
“I don’t think it enters into it at all. He’s a very active man, always been athletic and very bright and inquisitive.”
