Bob Costas Eye Infection, When NBC’s Olympic coverage began on Thursday night, viewers across the country were likely asking themselves the same thing: What’s up with Bob Costas’s glasses?
When the camera zoomed in, you could see that the glasses might not be a fashion statement. Something seemed wrong with Costas’s left eye. Thankfully, the host didn’t leave viewers speculating for long. After previewing the night’s coverage on NBC, he gave a self-deprecating explanation in a way only Bob Costas could:
“Bear with me for a moment as I spare my friends in the press office countless inquiries. I have no choice to go all Peabody and Sherman on you for the next couple of nights since I woke up this morning with my left eye swollen shut and just about as red as the old Soviet flag. According to the NBC doctors here, it’s some kind of minor infection which should resolve itself by the weekend. If only all my issues would resolve themselves that quickly, but that’s another story.”
That’s why he’s the best in the business, folks: cartoon references, an allusion to the old USSR and a whole bunch of self-mocking humor. I fully expect NBC’s production team to have some fun in the next few days by putting Costas side-by-side with a picture of the aforementioned Peabody and Sherman.
